NASA's Juno has measured Europa's icy shell at roughly 18 miles (≈29 km), a thickness that significantly lengthens the pathway between surface and the hidden ocean. A thicker ice lid reduces surface–ocean chemical exchange and makes direct sampling or detection of life far more challenging for future missions.
