United 787‑9 (UA2127) returns to LAX after left‑engine smoke; rapid evacuation, no injuries

United flight UA2127, a Boeing 787‑9 from LAX to Newark, returned to LAX and was rapidly evacuated after the left engine began smoking and crews reported an engine fire shortly after departure at about 11:20 a.m. The jet climbed to roughly 18,000 ft before turning back; no injuries were reported.
