EU ETS reform backlash: airlines warn expanded carbon pricing will raise fares without guaranteed aviation decarbonisation reinv
Airlines for Europe (A4E) and IATA have sharply criticised the European Commission’s proposed ETS review, arguing the planned extension to additional international flights will increase passenger costs while offering no clear mechanism to reinvest ETS revenues in aviation decarbonisation. The Commission’s plan would apply ETS to more departures from the EEA to destinations within 5,000km from the “largest aerodrome” hub, with implementation discussed for 2029.
