At 12:01 a.m. ET a lapse in federal appropriations triggered a U.S. government shutdown that has closed much of NASA, prompting agency furlough notices and orderly shutdown activities. NASA said roughly 15,000 employees — more than 80% of its workforce — were told to stay home.
