JWST detects oldest-known supernova — explosion dated to under 1 billion years after the Big Bang

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has identified the oldest-known supernova, a stellar explosion that occurred when the universe was less than one billion years old — about 5% of its current age. The observation demonstrates Webb can resolve individual stars and transients in the early universe, expanding probes of cosmic origins.
